Penalties associated with a NAP for IRS can have severe outcomes and affect your livelihood. Defense of impaired operation is a specialty and you should hire someone who knows the system.

Initial Consult

Free to discuss your situation.

Assessment

$500 non-refundable assessment fee to review your file on SafeRoads Alberta Portal, report back findings, and discuss possible defense strategies.

Filing Fee

SafeRoads Alberta currently charges $150 to file an appeal. You may file this yourself, or we can complete this for you.

Written Review

Should we decide to work together, fee for representation for a written review is an additional $2100. This covers all services including assistance for vehicle seizure reimbursements. 

Oral Review

Should we decide to work together, fee for representation for an oral review is an additional $2,625. This covers all services including assistance for vehicle seizure reimbursements 

Note: there are benefits and drawbacks to each type of Review. These will be discussed with you to assist you in making the best decision.

Costs for doing nothing

Current costs related to a first occurrence conviction for a NAP IRS: FAIL

Fine

Current fine is $1000 plus a victim surcharge of $200 for a total of $1200

Suspension

You will receive a 90 day suspension where by you cannot drive. Costs of an uber, bus pass, or getting a ride from friends or family will vary. Some options obviously aren't available in rural areas but monthly bus passes average $100 - total $300.

Vehicle Seizure

Your vehicle will be seized for 30 days. You cannot drive it, nor can friends or family. The only way to get the vehicle back earlier, is to appeal the penalty. Average costs for a tow in Edmonton are $1718 and in Calgary are $1501

Interlock Program

After the initial 90 day suspension, you can apply for the interlock program for the following 12 months. Set up fee and 12 month service approximately $1495.86

Insurance Rates

Insurance rate increase will vary as you may have difficulty getting insurance, but high risk insurance may apply. Increases of 300% to 500% in rates are not uncommon. If your insurance was $1250 per year, an increase of $2500 to $5000 for the next 8 to 10 years is a real possibility.

Course

Currently first time offenders must complete the "Planning Ahead" course prior to getting their licence back. Cost $379.

Additional Fees

Additional fees vary, but would include restricted driver's licence fee, road test when applicable, etc.
